Butterfly Tagging — Nature Day Celebration At Chaplin Nature Center

Celebrate the wonders of nature by participating in the monarch migration. The butterfly tagging program is part of on-going research conducted by the University of Kansas. Participants will learn about the migration and be given an opportunity to capture and tag a monarch. Leaders from the Wichita Audubon Society will be offering a variety of nature hikes throughout the day. Bald Eagle Winter Hike

Mid-winter is one of the best times to view Bald Eagles in Kansas. Searching for open water, many eagles migrate down to Kansas to spend the winter on the Arkansas River. The program will start with a 15-minute introduction to the history and adaptations of the Bald Eagle. We will then take a 1.5-mile hike down to the River to search for over-wintering eagles. Binoculars are helpful but not required.

Bald Eagle nesting activity starts in early winter and by mid-March the eggs have hatched, and the eaglets should be several weeks old. This is a great opportunity to view both the adults and young. As the nest site is protected by Federal law, we will take special care not to disturb them by setting up our spotting scopes at a safe distance. Chaplin Spring Clean-up

It’s that time of year to get the Nature Center ready for another year of visitors. We need your help on a variety of indoor and outdoor projects. Trimming trails, repairing bridges, raking leaves and cleaning the building are a few areas that need attention. Be sure to wear old clothes and bring a pair of work gloves. Soft leaf rakes and/or tree pruners needed. Call for more information.
