SUMMARY:April Program Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On the Trail to 5\,000\, by Dr. Roger L. Boyd\n\nJan and Roger Boyd have been birding together for over fifty-five years. During that time\, they have taken 50 foreign birding trips and visited over 30 countries. Their goal for 2026 has been to visit Belize\, Jamaica\, and Ecuador to finally reach 5\,000 species\, nearly half the species of birds in the world. This presentation will be a recap of some of the best sightings and locations visited over the years and a big reveal of whether they reached their goal. \nDr. Roger L. Boyd\, emeritus professor of biology at Baker University and field trip chair for Lawrence Bird Alliance\, will be the presenter. \n\nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. We will also have dinner with our speaker before the program at Jason’s Deli\, 7447 W 21st St N\, at 5:30 pm.

SUMMARY:May Program Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Photographing Kansas Landscapes\, by Scott Bean\n\n Kansas has 11 different physiographic regions which have unique geological features and history which in turn influences how the various regions look. These different regions also mean that Kansas has more diverse landscapes than many people recognize. This presentation will focus on showcasing the beauty and diversity of the landscapes that can be found around the state with a focus on the Smoky Hills\, The Red (Gyp) Hills\, and the Flint Hills. Information on places to visit and photograph the different regions will also be included. Brief discussions on the geological history of the different regions will be covered as well as threats the regions\, especially grasslands\, face. \nGrowing up\, I had a lot of opportunities to spend time outside\, however I didn’t pay much attention to the landscapes around me. I did\, however\, learn to really love being outside. For me\, my first forays into photography were an excuse to be outside and that ‘excuse’ is still a major driving force for me to be behind the camera. I like being outside and I like wandering around country roads looking for landscapes and wildlife to photograph. It is fun for me to try and find beautiful or interesting scenes\, wildlife etc. at those moments of stunning light that turn the ordinary into something awesome.  Trying to put together all the elements\, weather\, light\, finding the exact subject I’m picturing in my head\, etc. is a fun challenge\, sort of like solving a puzzle. In the end\, photography for me  boils down to enjoying being outside and overcoming challenges associated with making photographs that capture the experiences and emotions I have when I press the shutter button. Photography continues to inspire me\, awe and frustrate me. I love the quote by Garry Winogrand “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.” I think that is a major factor thatkeeps me interested in photography. \nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. SUMMARY:Flint Hills Tallgrass Prairie Preserve Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy\, this 3.5 square-mile property has been open to the public since 2023.  This will be a hike of several miles on mowed trails through tallgrass prairie and the headwaters of the South Fork of the Cottonwood River. We should see some of the sought-after  Henslow’s Sparrow\, many other birds and wildlife\, and a variety of  prairie plants and wildflowers.    Meet in the parking lot of the Great Plains Nature Center\, 6232 E. 29th St\, Wichita  at 7 am.
