Birding the Tropics at the Sedgwick County Zoo

Meet in the lobby of the Tropics Building at 9:15 (the zoo opens at 9). Leave the cold weather outside and enjoy birding in the tropics. Bring admission money. Binoculars will be helpful. We’ll have an intro by a keeper and a list of birds to find.

Home School Birds at the Feeder

visit and live in Chisholm Creek Park. No birding experience is needed. Expect 1–2 miles of walking on paved paths. The walk will last about 90 minutes. Meet at the Great Plains Nature Center parking lot.

Bald Eagle nesting activity starts in early winter and by mid-March the eggs have hatched, and the eaglets should be several weeks old. This is a great opportunity to view both the adults and young. As the nest site is protected by Federal law, we will take special care not to disturb them by setting up our spotting scopes at a safe distance. Asian bush honeysuckle is an invasive plant causing serious habitat damage. We’ll spend 3 — 4 hours removing these plants, directed by the Wichita Parks Department staff. Tools, gloves, and water will be provided. Meet by the stone arch at the SW corner of the park.

Cancelled – Sandhill Cranes at Kearney, NE

Each spring, the Platte River in central Nebraska hosts the largest gathering of cranes in the world. This WAS field trip in early April plans to visit the top viewing areas near Kearney, Nebraska. We plan to visit the riverside crane blind of Rowe Sanctuary, the Fort Kearney Hike and Bike trail bridge, the Central Platte Natural Resources District Platte River viewing deck, and the Rainwater Basin’s Funk Wildlife Production Area. Depending on weather conditions and recent bird sightings, these locations may change…

It’s that time of year to get the Nature Center ready for another year of visitors. We need your help on a variety of indoor and outdoor projects. Trimming trails, repairing bridges, raking leaves and cleaning the building are a few areas that need attention. Be sure to wear old clothes and bring a pair of work gloves. Soft leaf rakes and/or tree pruners needed. Call for more information.
