2nd Saturday Bird Walk

visit and live in Chisholm Creek Park. No birding experience is needed. Expect 1–2 miles of walking on paved paths. The walk will last about 90 minutes. Meet at the Great Plains Nature Center parking lot and practice social distancing!

Bald Eagle Nest Viewing

There are eight Bald Eagle nests in Cowley County. During this program we will visit one of the nest sites to give participants a chance to see adults and eaglets. Nest sites are Federally protected so spotting scopes will be a safe distance from the nest. Participants will meet and can view the eagles anytime between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon at Veterans Lake in Arkansas City.

Meet at the city park in Marion at 8 a.m. We will visit the county lake, the reservoir and several other hot spots with possible greater prairie chicken views. Reservations not required but it would be helpful to notify Tom if you plan to attend so that we can make some plans to limit our impact.

We need your help to get the facilities in tip-tip shape for the upcoming year. We are looking for volunteers to work on a variety of outdoor and indoor projects. Trimming trails, checking bridges, raking leaves, and working on the front flowerbeds are just a few of the projects. Be sure to wear old clothes and bring a pair of work gloves.  Soft leaf rakes and tree pruners needed. Call the Center if you have additional questions.

Chisholm Creek Park Cleanup

Join us after the second Saturday bird walk (approximately 9:45 a.m.) Meet at the Great Plains Nature Center parking lot to collect trash and keep our adopted park looking nice. Bring gloves, we'll provide trash bags, along with coffee, water, Gatorade and donuts. We'll finish with a raffle for a birdhouse and a group picture!

Asian bush honeysuckle is an invasive plant causing serious habitat damage. We'll spend 3-4 hours removing these plants, directed by the Wichita Parks Department staff. Tools, gloves and water will be provided. Meet by the stone arch at the southwest corner of the park.
