SUMMARY:November Program Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Recovery of grassland birds in the Great Plains through restoration of native keystone species\, by Henry S. Pollock\n\n Grassland birds are the most rapidly declining group of birds across North America\, with population declines of >50% since 1970. One of the main drivers of grassland bird declines has been the widespread loss of native keystone species of the Great Plains\, such the American bison\, American beaver\, and black-tailed prairie dog. In this talk\, Dr. Henry Pollock will present a sweeping ecological history of the Great Plains\, tracing the declines of the Great Plains keystones since 1800 and their implications for grassland bird conservation. He will also discuss his current role as Executive Director of the Southern Plains Land Trust (SPLT)\, whose mission is to create and rewild a network of shortgrass prairie preserves across the Southern Great Plains\, and SPLT’s current efforts to help recover grassland bird populations in Southeast Colorado. \nHenry has a background in ecology and conservation with a strong focus on quantitative\, data-driven science and practice. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Ecology\, Evolution\, & Conservation Biology and 15+ years’ experience as a wildlife biologist and academic researcher. He is dedicated to gaining ground for prairie wildlife and continuing to expand SPLT’s reach throughout the Southern Plains to bring back the American Serengeti. \nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. We will also have dinner with our speaker before the program at Jason’s Deli\, 7447 W 21st St N\, at 5:30 pm.

SUMMARY:January Program Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Breeding Bird Surveys in Kansas\, by Chuck Otte\n The Breeding Bird Survey\, coordinated by the US Geological Survey\, is one of the longest running and most rigorously coordinated citizen science data collection program in the country. The BBS is a long-term\, large-scale\, international avian monitoring program initiated in 1966 to track the status and trends of North American bird populations. Over 4\,000 routes have been created across the country and are ran yearly\, between Memorial Day and 4th of July (in Kansas) by volunteers who rise well before dawn to spend over 4 hours documenting birds seen and heard. Otte will talk about the history of Breeding Bird Surveys\, with specific discussion of Kansas routes\, how the routes are conducted\, and some of the amazing results to come out of the surveys\, some good\, some quite sad. \nChuck Otte is a native of York County\, Nebraska\, earning two degrees from the University of Nebraska\, Lincoln. A retired county extension agent for Kansas State University\, he served as the agriculture\, horticulture and natural resources extension agent for Geary County for over 40 years.  A birdwatcher from his very early years\, Chuck is heavily involved in Kansas Birding circles\, probably being most well known for his quarter century efforts in maintaining checklists for all 105 Kansas counties. Chuck wears many hats in the birding community. He currently serves as Corresponding Secretary and Webmaster for the Kansas Ornithological Society (KOS)\, secretary of the Kansas Bird Records Committee\, statewide eBird reviewer\, and State Coordinator for the USGS Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). Chuck is a past president of KOS and served as it’s Newsletter Editor for a lengthy tenure. Chuck was one of the co-authors of Birds in Kansas. In retirement Chuck loves to garden and of course go birdwatching and maintain bird sighting records for the state. Chuck and his wife Jaye live on the farmstead near Milford where Jaye grew up. \nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. DESCRIPTION:Antennae up! Why are bars and bugs disappearing?\, by Dr. Mary-Liz Jameson\n  \n\nRaise your hand! Do you know what a Meadowlark eats? Nearly one-third of North American bird species are in decline\, and one reason is that many birds are finding it harder to locate the nutritious food they need. Eastern Meadowlark populations\, for example\, have declined by more than 50% within a single human lifetime. Most baby birds depend on insects to grow and survive\, including meadowlarks. In fact\, insects are the foundation of many food webs\, transferring energy from plants to birds and other wildlife. When insect populations decline\, the effects ripple throughout the ecosystem. So why are insects dwindling? There is no single cause\, but changes in plant nutrition play an essential role. Yup\, bite for bite\, crops and other plants are less nutritious due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and declining levels of essential nutrients in plant tissues like nitrogen and sodium\, thus making plants less nutritious. You can help! Grassland restorations create habitat for insects\, birds\, and other wildlife. In prairie ecosystems\, carefully managed cattle grazing introduces natural processes (like nitrogen recycling) and restores the natural balance for all biodiversity including the prairie’s familiar birds like the Barn swallow\, Yellow Warbler\, and the Kansas state bird\, the Western Meadowlark. \nBiodiversity is nature’s recipe for success! Mary Liz Jameson is a biodiversity scientist who explores the interconnections between organisms on the planet. Based on scientific evidence\, we know that each organism — from teeny dung beetle to delightful dolphin — is 100% essential for proper planetary function. Jameson studies habitat declines\, animal declines\, and ecosystem sustainability. As an insect biodiversity scientist\, Jameson has discovered and named 50 new species\, and nine species have been named in her honor. Her research on biodiversity is recognized nationally\, and she is one of only four scientists at Wichita State university who is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. \n\nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. We will also have dinner with our speaker before the program at Jason’s Deli\, 7447 W 21st St N\, at 5:30 pm.

SUMMARY:March Program Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Birding in Ecuador\, by Kevin Groeneweg\n  \nKevin visited Southern Ecuador in February of 2026. He will share photos of some of the over 300 species seen during this two-week trip that targeted the endemics of the Tumbesian biodiversity region of South America. The Tumbesian region is a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot straddling the border of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Known for its highly restricted-range species\, it contains 58 endemic bird species and unique ecosystems ranging from equatorial dry forests to pristine coastal mangrove swamps. Kevin will share photos of some of the over 300 species seen during this two-week trip\, spending time in several of the special conservation areas sponsored by the Jocotoco Foundation\, where sought-after species such as the Jocotoco Antpitta\, El Oro Parakeet\, and Ecuador’s newest endemic\, the Blue-throated Hillstar\, were found. This program pays tribute to Tom Ewert\, who organized the trip and spent his last days birding in Ecuador. \nKevin’s first international birding trip was to Ecuador in 2005. His love of travel has since taken him and his wife Laura to many countries around the world in search of new and fascinating birds. Kevin has held various positions on the Wichita Audubon Society Board\, including President\, and currently serves as Treasurer. He also serves on the Board of the Kansas Ornithological Society. He has birded extensively in every county in Kansas\, and has visited most of the major birding hotspots in the U.S. \nThis program pays tribute to Tom Ewert\, who organized the trip and spent his last days birding in Ecuador. \nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
