She serves on the boards of the Wichita Audubon Society\, the Kansas Ornithological Society\, and the Great Plains Nature Center. In 2025\, she completed a Kansas Big Year while balancing a full-time career in Human Resources\, traveling across the state in pursuit of birds. Jennifer enjoys exploring Kansas’s diverse habitats\, chasing good birds\, and connecting with the people and places that make birding in Kansas so rewarding. \nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. SUMMARY:October Program Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Seabirds and Pelagic Birding in North America\, by Pete Janzen\n\nAs a group\, seabirds are among the least known and enigmatic bird species in the world and North America.  Pete will provide an overview of the seabirds and other wildlife found offshore on the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts\, as well as coastal Alaska.  Most of the species of alcids\, shearwaters\, petrels\, storm-petrels\, gannets\, boobies\, cormorants\, jaegers and skuas that occur in North American waters will be discussed\, along with whales\, dolphins\, seals\, and other pelagic wildlife. The program will also discuss other aspects of pelagic birding\, some of the more popular pelagic destinations and conservation concerns. \n Pete Janzen has been an active birder throughout the United States\, Kansas\, and the Wichita area since the late 1970’s.  He is the author of The Birds of Sedgwick County and Cheney Reservoir (2006)\, and (co-authored with Bob Gress)\, The Guide to Kansas Birds and Birding Hotspots\, Revised and Expanded (2025). He has had a particular interest in pelagic birding since 1994\, when he took his first pelagic trip from Monterey\, California with Shearwater Journeys.  Since then\, he has been on nearly 20 offshore pelagic birding expeditions throughout the United States and Canada. In the past he has served as an officer of Wichita Audubon and the Kansas Ornithological Society and is currently the vice-president of WAS.  He is a graduate of Wichita State University \nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. We will also have dinner with our speaker before the program at Jason’s Deli\, 7447 W 21st St N\, at 5:30 pm.

SUMMARY:November Program Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Recovery of grassland birds in the Great Plains through restoration of native keystone species\, by Henry S. Pollock\n\n Grassland birds are the most rapidly declining group of birds across North America\, with population declines of >50% since 1970. One of the main drivers of grassland bird declines has been the widespread loss of native keystone species of the Great Plains\, such the American bison\, American beaver\, and black-tailed prairie dog. In this talk\, Dr. Henry Pollock will present a sweeping ecological history of the Great Plains\, tracing the declines of the Great Plains keystones since 1800 and their implications for grassland bird conservation. He will also discuss his current role as Executive Director of the Southern Plains Land Trust (SPLT)\, whose mission is to create and rewild a network of shortgrass prairie preserves across the Southern Great Plains\, and SPLT’s current efforts to help recover grassland bird populations in Southeast Colorado. \nHenry has a background in ecology and conservation with a strong focus on quantitative\, data-driven science and practice. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Ecology\, Evolution\, & Conservation Biology and 15+ years’ experience as a wildlife biologist and academic researcher. He is dedicated to gaining ground for prairie wildlife and continuing to expand SPLT’s reach throughout the Southern Plains to bring back the American Serengeti. \nNOTE: Our programs this year will be in the Cargill Learning Center at the Sedgwick County Zoo. We will also have dinner with our speaker before the program at Jason’s Deli\, 7447 W 21st St N\, at 5:30 pm.

SUMMARY:El Dorado Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Christmas Bird Counts are all-day efforts to census all birds in an established 15-mile wide diameter circle\, and are organized by count compilers. Volunteers count every bird they see or hear all day. It’s not just a species tally—all birds are counted all day\, giving an indication of the total number of birds in the circle that day. All help is welcome. \nInform the compiler if you plan to attend so they can plan ahead. That also allows them to plan routes and to contact you in case cancellation is necessary. Remember to dress for the weather and expect to do a fair amount of walking. \nMeet at the McDonalds on Central in El Dorado.
